June’s Topic: “Your Patient’s Gender Identity: Why It Matters”
June 7, 20236:30pm – 7:30pm (EST)

Speaker
Allison M. Funicelli, MPA, CCLA, ARM, CPHRM, DFASHRMAVP, Risk Management Group Gender identity is more than how a patient outwardly expresses oneself. How a person dresses or acts does not determine their gender. Transgender people may experience discrimination or stigma in their day to day lives including bullying, physical assaults or hate crimes and often experience higher rates of depression and anxiety. It is important to understand why a patient’s identity and expression matters and to create a trusting patient-provider relationship when treating a transgender patient. The session will review the difference between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation and discuss issues psychiatrists need to consider when treating transgender patients and provide ways to mitigate risk when treating this patient population.
